Genalogy And Discovering Who Are Your Birth Parents
Wednesday, May 20th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedOf all the emotional processes you go through when studying and researching your family tree it is the hunt for birth parents that is the most challenging. Different areas have different laws but pricacy rules can make it hard to find out exact names and details. Even obtaining locations from the adoption agency or from your adoptive parents may be difficult. It is not uncommon that birth parents do not want to be found. This can be a very long and difficult process so be prepared to spend the time on a long search.
The first thing to do is to ask your adoptive parents what they know about your birth family. It can be hurtful when they discover you are looking for your birth mother. So you should try to be sensitive when approaching them for information. Explaining that you wish to find the roots of your genealogy and this is not some sort of rejection of their love and affection should go some way to reassure them they have nothing to fear. Explain that finding your birth parents is in no way replacing your real family. If you can get a forename for your birth mother then you are doing better than most. It may be that the only information they ever had was the name of the adoption agency that made the arrangements. It will be especially tricky to find information if you came from an overseas agency. Some adoptive parents have some contact with the mother before adoption though many do not. Any information they can give you will assist in your search and even without a name a descripton of her height and weight could help you.
You need to establish what the laws are in whichever state you are in or whatever country. It may be worth your while to invest in professional help to assist with understanding the laws. Take care that you stick to the rules and always abide by the law. You may find some agencies who can help you and they are often to be found online. Having some legal advice can be invaluable in your search. Adoption reunions are worth looking into and you can usually sign up online. If you are really lucky you may find your birth mother who has been searching for you as well, for years.
Eventually the agency that dealt with your adoption can be approached. It may or may not be possible for them to assist but you should ask just in case they can help. It can happen that they will pass on a letter from you to your birth mother if you ask them. In your letter you would explain you want help to research your birth family tree. The adoption agency may also be able to tell you about your mother's medical records, if nothing else, so that you can be aware of your family's health history.
It may be tough but try not to simply give up when you hit problems. You may never locate your birth mother, but even finding out her name and age can help your draw up a family tree. Your birth father will probably be even harder to find. Should you reach a complete impasse why not research your adoptive family as an alternative. It is, after all, their affection that was with you while they raised you and gave you their family name.
